Dental Cleaning

What is a Dental Cleaning?

Dental cleanings are part of your preventative care routine and are a crucial component to keeping your teeth healthy. Cleanings are performed by licensed dental hygienists, who work diligently to scrape and clean away plaque and debris from the teeth. They will check the gums during the cleaning to spot signs of gingivitis and gum disease so that treatment can be started before the condition progresses. Cleanings should be done on every patient, both young and old, once every six months.

Why would you need a Dental Cleaning?

You need a dental cleaning because it helps to keep your teeth, gums and mouth healthy. Even with careful brushing, plaque can begin to buildup and harden on different surfaces of the teeth. This hardened plaque is known as calculus and it can cause problems concerning bad breath, gingivitis and dental decay. The hygienist will clear away all of this calculus and check your gums for signs of inflammation and infection.

What makes you a good candidate for a Dental Cleaning?

Everyone is a good candidate for a routine dental cleaning. In fact, you should start bringing your children into the office for exams and cleanings as soon as you begin to notice their first teeth coming up through the gums. For children, teens and adults, it’s important to come in twice a year for a professional cleaning. We can even pre-schedule your dental appointments for you so that you don’t need to remember to schedule a visit.

What can you expect during a typical Dental Cleaning?

During a typical dental cleaning, you’ll come into our office and be seated by the hygienist. The hygienist may take x-rays to help with diagnosing decay and other problems. After taking x-rays, the hygienist will work to clean the teeth using scalers and other tools. Once this is done, the teeth are polished and flossed. The gums are measured to check for signs of any inflammation and you’ll be given an exam by Dr. Chien. The cleaning procedure takes less than an hour from the time you’re seated until the time you are able to leave.
