What exactly are Dental Sealants?
Dental sealants are placed on the biting surface of one or more teeth to create a barrier on the enamel. The sealant can help to keep out bacteria that would otherwise cause decay. Sealants are ideal for children as well as adults who are prone to developing cavities. They are completely clear and no one will even notice that they’re on your teeth.
Why might you need or want Dental Sealants?
You may need a dental sealant if you are prone to developing cavities. The sealant will prevent further decay from happening, resulting in the need for additional fillings. For children, sealants can help to prevent tooth decay and loss because of poor diet and hygiene habits. Sealants can last for up to three years with proper care and can be reapplied as needed.
What makes you a candidate for Dental Sealants?
Dental sealants offer benefits that most other restorative and preventative options simply cannot provide. The procedure is done quickly and requires no anesthetic whatsoever. Sealants can be placed on one or more teeth and are most beneficial to pediatric patients and those who are more prone to dental decay. The procedure can take less than a half an hour in our office and delivers optimal, preventative results.
What happens when you have Dental Sealants placed?
You or your child will come in and have the tooth cleaned and dried. A clear liquid is brushed only on the top of the tooth, where it will then be cured using the same light that’s used to harden fillings and other restorations. If additional sealants are needed, these will be applied at the same time. You can expect the sealant to last anywhere from one to three years before they’ll need to be reapplied to the vulnerable teeth. Sealants can prevent the need for fillings, root canals and other more invasive dental procedures. Because they’re clear, no one will know they’re even on your teeth or your child’s teeth.
