What are Tooth-Colored Fillings?
Tooth-colored fillings use a composite resin material to fill areas of a tooth that have been compromised by decay. Composite fillings are ideal for areas in the mouth where metal (amalgam) fillings tend to fall out. They are relatively durable and long-lasting, with most patients finding their composite fillings lasting for up to a decade before needing replacement. These fillings are perfect for patients who are sensitive to metal or looking for an alternative to amalgam fillings.
Why would you need Tooth-Colored Fillings?
You will probably need a tooth-colored composite filling if you have a cavity in one or more of your teeth. The decay will be removed and the filling put into its place. Placing a filling prevents the decay from compromising too much of the tooth and is essential in maintaining the overall integrity of the tooth’s structure itself. You may want a tooth-colored filling if you’re looking to remove and replace older metal fillings that you’ve had for years.
What makes you eligible for Tooth-Colored Fillings?
Most patients are suitable candidates for tooth-colored fillings. The procedure only requires local anesthetic, so no sedation is needed. To determine if a filling is needed, Dr. Chien will perform an exam and x-rays will be taken to look for signs of decay. If one or more cavities is found, we’ll schedule you to come in and have fillings placed.
What can you expect during the procedure to place Tooth-Colored Fillings?
Dr. Chien will first administer a local anesthetic before the work is started. The tooth is drilled into and the decay removed using a slow speed drill. The composite is poured into the hole, smoothed into place and cured with a bright blue curing light. You can enjoy years worth of smiles with your brand new filling. If we’re replacing old metal fillings, they’ll be completely removed first and the hole in the tooth smoothed out to provide adequate space for the newer tooth-colored filling.
